October is all about Halloween and Polish Pickup celebrates this under the theme Urban Legends! Of course, this had to rear its head in my house! Earlier on, my boys found out all about Bloody Mary! I almost laughed when my littlest told me because I couldn’t believe this story was still making the rounds. They’ve always been pretty involve in this hobby of mine, but I’ve been mostly sneaky. I’m typing this right next to them and you’d think I’m watching some NSFW content. Needless to say, I love Halloween but I’ll be glad to get this phase in the past! On to the gruesome pretties!
Polish Pickup is a fun Facebook Group where members submit and vote for one theme for the month. Afterward, indie makers create a polish or product based on the decided theme. Members can make purchases through the Polish Pickup website during the four-day shopping window, where you can pick as little or as many items as you desire. The flat rate shipping price of US $3.00/CAD $5.00 is the cherry on top. Evidenced by its rapid growth, PPU is a very clever concept that has introduced me to many new indie brands, as well as given a wider stage for smaller, well-loved ones.
Recently Indie Pickup has been following the same sale and shipping schedules as Polish Pickup and this month, posts from makers are being combined in the Polish Pickup Facebook group. Indie Pickup was created to house most of the extra non-polish items that came along after the explosive growth of Polish Pickup. The Facebook group still exists but has been made redundant, with all sharing being move to the Polish Pickup Facebook Group. All your Pickup products in one place!
Polish Pickup October 2019 – Urban Legends
Cameo Colours Lacquers – The Truth Is Under There
The Bermuda Triangle or Shaman’s Gate of Oklahoma, Beaver Dunes Park
Glow in the Dark
What a great way to start! Cameo has a glow in the dark nude for us this round based on the legend of The Bermuda Triangle or Shaman’s Gate of Oklahoma. Legend says that Francisco Vázquez de Coronado, always in search of gold, ignored the warnings of his Native American guides to avoid the dunes, only to have a handful of his men disappear in what has been described by the accompanying friar as “flashes of green light” and, by Coronado himself as, “the work of the Devil.”. They say that anyone who discovers what is really beneath the sand disappears.
The Truth is Under There is a sandy nude crelly base with lovely gold micro glitter, holographic micro flakes and gold metallic micro flakes. It also has a green to champagne to blush shimmer that helps lead into the green glow in the dark feature. The glow in the dark on this polish here is fantastic and frightfully accompanied me during my sleep. I love how you can make out the flakes while it’s glowing. The polish applies well with a little bit of texture left back. This is easily smoothed with topcoat. I’m wearing two coats with a glossy topcoat.

Cupcake Polish – The Crooked Man
The Crooked Man
Thermal
The Crooked Man is an Urban Legend based on an English nursery rhyme. Sara isn’t the only one drawing on this legend for inspiration. The Crooked man also inspired the movie The Conjuring 2, taking on a scarier twist on the children’s story.
Sara’s The Crooked Man is a temperature sensitive jelly polish which when cool shows a plum purple base and then warms to a berry red. In both states, you note lots of iridescent flakes that shift from green to blue to pink. Flakie lovers, this one is for you! It is loaded with flakies so I advise a delicate hand with application and waiting for the layers to dry sufficiently before applying the next. This will stop you from dragging the bottom layer off. The thermal shift is on the monochromatic, slightly subtle side with the plum and berry tone. There is some bumpiness from the flakes so topcoat is a must! I’m wearing two coats with a glossy topcoat.

Glisten & Glow – The Legend of Hannah Cranna
Hannah Cranna
Jill has two items for us this round. Let’s take a look at her nail polish first. She chose Hannah Cranna as her inspiration behind her aptly named polish. Hannah Cranna was an alleged witch who hails from Connecticut just like Jill. The Legend of Hannah Cranna is a teal jelly with rainbow iridescent flakes, iridescent glitters and holographic flakes. The polish is a bit on the thicker side but still manageable. It does dry slightly bumpy which is smoothed off with topcoat. I’m wearing two coats with a glossy topcoat.

Glisten & Glow – Top and Base Coat
Jill’s second offering is her top and base coat duo. The Glisten & Glow Base Coat is of the sticky variety which allows the polish to adhere better to the nail. The Glisten & Glow Top Coat is an award winning fast drying glossy topcoat. It’s one I’ve used on and off for years and I love it. I used both of them in the manis below to show both how the base coat’s look on the bare nail and how it works as a sticky base for stamping. Also notice the glossy sheen from the topcoat and how it works with white stamping polish which can be notorious for streaking. These two make a great sandwich for a lasting mani.
Glisten & Glow Top Coat! It’s an award winning fast dry glossy top coat. Its benefits include: 2-4 minutes or less and your nails will dry, durable, long lasting with days or weeks of no tip wear, or chipping! And let’s talk about that crystal clear shiny glossy “wet/gel like”” appearance. Intensifies any special effects polishes! Looking for something that is also black light responsive, you have found it here!
Glisten & Glow Base Coat is a sticky, long lasting and stain preventing base coat! Achieve 5 + days of long lasting wear of your favorite mani when using Glisten & Glow Base Coat. Bond your mani with our base coat as the sticky formula acts as double-sided tape. 2 coats of our base coat applied to a prepped nail will help prevent any stains to the natural nail. – Jill

Great Lakes Lacquer – Nessy
Mariah’s creation was inspired by the legendary Loch Ness Monster of Loch Ness, Scotland! Lovingly coined Nessy, the polish has a sea green base glimmering with a silvery green to blue shifting shimmer. The polish applies well and dries smooth. I’m wearing two coats with a glossy topcoat.

Jior Couture – Come At Me Mo!
The Momo Challenge
Thermal
Jior brings you another thermal inspired by The Momo Challenge. The Momo challenge was a hoax and internet urban legend about a challenge geared toward children. It was reported that Momo would show up on kids YouTube videos and the character would try to convince kids to hurt themselves. Momo scared had parents scared and angry.
While I am thankfully unfamiliar with Momo, I am all about this polish! Here we have a temperature sensitive base that is black when cool and greenish beige when warm. Mixed in are iridescent glitters and a gold to copper to pink shimmer. I had no issues with this polish and found it very quick to react. I’m wearing two coats with a glossy topcoat.

JReine Cosmetics – Last Bite
New Orleans Vampires
Jill has two offerings this month! First, let’s look at her nail polish inspired by New Orleans Vampires. Last Bite is a shifty little minx! The base has a pink to purple shift which is accentuated by an intense fuchsia to gold to green shifty shimmer. Last Bite has an easy application and smooth finish. I’m wearing two coats with a glossy topcoat

JReine Cosmetics – Lust Pixie Magic Kit
New Orleans Vampires
Last round, Jill introduced her burnishing powder and she has another for us for October. The Lust Pixie Magic Kit is a captivating violet to fuchsia to gold to green shift with a punch of holographic pigment. For this swatch, I’m wearing over a royal blue cream polish. Depending on the base color you choose, different accents will be more prominent.
The kit comes complete with Jill’s Super Base sticky base coat, the pixie magic powder in Lust and an applicator. For an idea of how it looks over other colors, be sure to look at other the swatchers photos!

KB Shimmer – Hidden Agenda
Area 51
Thermal, Glow in the Dark
Area 51 has had it’s fair 15 minutes in the spotlight lately and I’m glad to see a polish playing homage to it. Hidden Agenda is a beauty! This thermal has when cool has a muted slate blue which warms to a soft dusty pink, much like the sky at dusk. In both states a green shimmer is evident. What I love about this polish is that it also glows in the dark and two different tones can also be spotted when aglow mid transition. My glow in the dark capture was not very good at all, but I decided to keep it so you could see the transition demarkation line. I’m wearing two coats with a glossy topcoat.
There are many urban legends that persist in pop culture, but none more so than Area 51. This military area has spawned rumors of hidden aliens and spaceship sightings for years. Area 51 has been featured on The Simpsons and is so ingrained in our culture that there’s even an event planned this year for thousands of people to storm the area to find out the truth. Area 51 and all of its mysteries is the inspiration for our Urban Legend polish, Hidden Agenda. – Christy

KB Shimmer – Pumpkin Patch Sugar Scrub
The Great Pumpkin – Charlie Brown
Ah, the season of pumpkin things is upon us and Christy is here to serve it. KB Shimmer’s sugar scrub is a mix of warm, sweet and earthy. Noted is the rich smell of baked pumpkin mingled with spicy clove, warm vanilla and cinnamon with a touch of earthiness from nutmeg. As always, the scrub is exfoliating and moisturizing with lots of warmth and coziness.
The chill in the air, the crunch of leaves, and seeing The Peanuts on TV really let me know that fall has officially arrived. It’s The Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown was a childhood favorite of mine, and one of my earliest memories of hearing about an urban legend. Linus believed that The Great Pumpkin would fly around and visit children, and leave toys for children who believed. Though waiting in the pumpkin patch only brought him disappointment, Linus still chose to believe. While it’s just an urban legend within a cartoon, The Great Pumpkin still holds a special place in my heart, and our Pumpkin Patch sugar scrub is a nod to this classic children’s story.

Moonflower Polish – The Stone Dog
The Stone Dog of Condado, a local Puerto Rican legend
Nadia drew from her Puerto Rican heritage for her polish, The Stone Dog. The Stone Dog is a dark brown polish with blue to purple color shifting shimmer. As with Nadia’s polishes, they are highly pigment and well suited for usual polish wear and stamping. I really enjoy how the shimmer shows up in here, especially with stamping. It came very close to being sufficient in one coat. I’m wearing two coats with a glossy topcoat.
The Stone Dog of Condado, (is) a local Puerto Rican legend. My parents told me this story when I was very young. There is a dog shaped rock facing the ocean in the area known as Condado Beach. Every time we drove past it they would remind us of the story. It goes like this: One day a soldier went off to war and his dog sat on a rock facing the sea, waiting for his return. The soldier died in the war and the dog stayed there waiting patiently, until he eventually turned to stone.

Painted Polish – Mr. Burgundy
Ron Burgundy
The Legend of Ron Burgundy is a film I often quote from. It usually lands quietly without recognition so imagine my delight to see Lexi’s inspiration for October! Mr Burgundy has a burgundy crelly base with gold and bronze color-shifting flakes. It’s easy to wear and perfect for Fall. I’m wearing two coats with a glossy topcoat.
In the great city of San Diego, there is one “urban legend” that eclipses all others – the man, the myth, the legend – Mr. Ron Burgundy. He’s kinda a big deal.

Starlight Polish – Razors, Glass & Poison
Dangerous Things in Halloween Candy
Issa’s inspiration is one I will probably think about when Halloween rolls around. Razors, Glass, and Poison is all about the dangerous things rumored to be put in candy. The polish has what she describes as a candy-and-acid green tinted base infused with a mix of large metallic silver flakes made from sterling silver, large translucent white glass flecks, and poison green shimmer. The polish sounds like a weapon, haha! My favorite feature in here are the large flecks; they play so well in that green jelly reflecting what’s around them.
There are a lot of flakies in here putting a slight drag on application. This also requires a bit of drying time in between coats to avoid lifting. I’m wearing three thin coats with a glossy topcoat.

Starlight Polish – Dangerous Candy Page Marker Set
Dangerous Things in Halloween Candy
The other offering from Starlight Polish is a seven piece set featuring six page markers and one charm. Issa used rectangular paper clips, stainless steel components, glow-in-the-dark glass beads, and glass cabochons in creating the page markers. I found them lightweight and easy to attach to your page. Each cabochon has a base color underneath an effect topper of sterling silver flakes, large translucent white glass fleck flakes, and poison green shimmer (a modified version the Starlight Polish Razors, Glass, and Poison!). The page marker charms’ base colors are candy apple red, mellow creme orange, lemon drop yellow, sour apple green, raspberry pop blue, and gotta-have grape purple. The charm’s base color is a silver linear holographic.

Sweet & Sour Lacquer – Ave Nocturna
Lechuzas – Mexican Myth
Darlene has a nude palate cleanser inspired by Lechuza! Lechuza is rumored to be a woman or witch who shape-shifts into a giant owl or bird, usually at night, and flies around seeking revenge on those who have wronged her during her life. Ave Nocturna is a pleasant nude crelly with UCC gold to silver flakies, taupe micro-flakies, silver holographic micro glitter and a touch of red shimmer. The application is smooth and easy with very little texture left back. I’m wearing two coats with a glossy topcoat.
When I was a little girl, my cousins in Mexico always swore they saw a Lechuza circling/flying over the neighbor’s house. Anytime we were outside late at night, we could hear like shushing (shh shh), and tsk tsk (tongue clicking), and all we could think to do was run inside! Until this day, I believe the lechuza was that neighbor herself! – Darlene

Vapid Wax – Bloody Mary
Bloody Mary
Jennifer whipped up a wax inspired by Bloody Mary. My kids are still scared of going into different parts of the house alone because of her enduring, thrilling story; so, um, yay!
Jenn describes this scent as asian plums and vanilla married with orchids and a hint of jasmine with charred Sichuan peppers and smoldering wood.
When Jenn, Lisa and I chatted about what the scents we picked up on, we all had different results! For me, the first thing I was greeted by was the floral array followed by the pricks of pepper. I’m not very keen on floral scents but spicy bite of the pepper is my favorite here. It’s a very complex mix which makes it all the more undefinable as to what everyone will pick up. It’s like the wax version of “what color is the dress”!
Bloody Mary is colored lavender and comes in a 3 oz clamshell block. I noted a bit of micro-glitter settling at the base of my while it melted.

Gorgeous polishes, especially the thermals. Love the bookmarks too 😀
