When Jill of Glisten & Glow reached out to me about swatching for a military themed collection, there was no way I would turn it down. The Tribute to the Troops is a collaboration between Jill and Brittney Cocco; a military wife who’s husband serves in the Air Force. This post features four rich cremes and two stunning toppers from the collection, as well as details on the naming process for each polish. It’s a pretty intimate collection with partial proceeds going to the United Service Organizations (USO). Let’s take a look!
Tribute to the Troops Collection
From the press packet sent, you could tell that this was an extra special collection. I learned quite a bit from Brittney as I read through about each polish. I’ve included her notes beneath each piece.
Boots on the Ground
Representing the US Army
Was I thrilled to see an olive green in the mix! You betcha! I have several olive polishes in my collection but there is always space for more. It’s like having plants; what’s one more!
Boots on the Ground is an olive green creme polish. The application is very smooth and light. It almost feels like a crelly but with less of the syrupy pull, if that makes sense. The crelly likeness also comes through with how glossy this (and all the other cremes) dry. It dries smooth to the touch with a high shine. I’m wearing two coats with a glossy topcoat, because, habit!
They are our first line of defense to protect and honor our country. They preserve peace and security.
OORAH! Semper Fi
Representing the Marines
It’s hard to choose a favorite in this collection. My heart leans toward the cremes and OORAH! Semper Fi is right up there! This is a rich crimson red creme, perfect for the fall. It carries the same lux, glossy finish. I’m wearing two coats with a glossy topcoat.
This polish was something we worked on the most. The marines is a special breed, and we knew we couldn’t do just anything.
Ships at Sea
Representing the US Navy
Next up, Ships At Sea! This is a brooding navy blue creme with an elegant shine. As with the other cremes, I’m wearing two coats with a glossy topcoat.
The vessels of transport necessary to carry out their mission that protect our waters.
SPARS of the Coast
Representing the US Coast Guard
The final creme polish is the first one I picked up to wear. SPARS of the Coast is a medium teal creme polish. It is the brightest of the collection and straddles the line between Summer and Fall. I’m wearing two coats with a glossy topcoat.
This color was natural, but the name was tough. We wanted a deeper meaning for a branch that doesn’t get a lot of buzz. Jill discovered a branch of WOMEN in the Coast Guard that was put together during WWII called SPARS. The program was designed to have women take over officer roles on shore so the men could be out at sea to fight. These women left behind a legacy of doing their job with enthusiasm and efficiency. They stepped up during a time when their country needed them them most and did their task through to a successful finish. Although the organization is no longer separate from the USCG, a female member is referred to as a SPAR.
Camouflage of Cremes
As soon as I saw the cremes, I knew I wanted to attempt a camouflage pattern with them. They were much easier than I expected it to be and I’m very pleased with how they turned out.
Serving With You
Representing the Military Spouses
Serving With You is a matte topper that features iridescent flakes that shift red to orange to green and rainbow crystal chameleon flakes. It also has a mix of gold shimmer and a red to pink aurora shimmer. I decided to pair this matte topper with the olive creme because I thought the gold and green would play well with each other. Instead of a full coating, I went with some minimal waves.
My husband, Andrew (Sgt. Cocco) has been deployed twice in his nine years of service in the Air Force. It is as much of service from me as it is from him but in a completely different way. We are a team. He knows I am holding down the fort while he’s away, so he has a home and a family to come back to, whether that is a twelve-hour shift or a seven-month deployment. We work because we work together.
Representing the US Air Force
Wrapping up this six piece is Sgt. Cocco! Sgt. Cocco is a clear based glossy topper brimming with blue to yellow UCC flakes, blue to green to yellow iridescent flakes as well as holographic flakes. There’s also an additional shift of blue to green from aurora shimmers. Pairing this over the crimson red of OORAH! Semper Fi really plays on the contrasts in a beautiful way. I’m wearing one coat with a glossy topcoat.
My husband, Andrew, has been in the Air Force for nine years in November. I have been with him since he was in boot camp and hav been able to see all of the achievements, medals, and honors. This polish is the most important polish to me because he is the most important thing in my life. Without Sgt. Cocco, this collection would never have been an idea in my head.
