I still have a couple more Polish Pickup goodies to go through to wrap up my review for this round. Carrie from Contrary Polish has two items up for grabs, a nail polish and a lip tint inspired by the shows My So-Called Life and one of my absolute favorites, Friends (clap, clap, clap, clap)! I’m really excited about these, so after the PPU recap, we’ll get right to it.
Polish Pickup is a fun Facebook Group where members submit and vote for one theme for the month. Afterward, indie makers create a polish or product based on the decided theme. Members can make purchases through the Polish Pickup website during the four-day shopping window, where you can pick as little or as many items as you desire. The flat rate shipping price of US $3.00/CAD $5.00 is the cherry on top. Evidenced by its rapid growth, PPU is a very clever concept that has introduced me to many new indie brands, as well as given a wider stage for smaller, well-loved ones.
Crimson Glow is incredibly striking! This is my second review that draws inspiration from My So-Called Life. I’ve gotta watch that show! Carrie stated that this polish was inspired by and named after the color Angela Chase dyed her hair in the first episode of My So-Called Life.
The base is a rich maroon filled with a multichrome shimmer that shifts from red to bronze to copper, with a mix of linear scattered holographic flecks. It has this magnificent inner glow that draws you in and makes me want Angela Chase hair. I’m wearing two coats with a glossy top coat.
Ah, Central Perk! Everytime I think of that coffee shop, I can see Gunther and his peroxide scented cologne, making heart eyes at Rachel. I’m not a lip swatcher, but I couldn’t pass up on it when Carrie wanted to pay homage to a 90’s brown lip color trend. I love me some brown lippie! From my swatches, you can see this shade is nowhere as intimidating as one would expect when they hear the words “brown tinted lip balm”. It shows up as a warm, pink leaning towards taupe on me. It’s very neutral and adds a slight touch of color to my lips.
The balm is cappuccino scented but chocolate flavored. I love coffee, it’s the nectar of the Gods! However, I am not a big fan coffee scented things. The coffee scent in this balm is not overpowering; the warmth and sweetness of it are what I get most. Furthermore, the chocolate flavor overrides the slight coffee scent.
Quick story! Friends was the very first show I remember legitimately binge watching. This was when we lived in Barbados as volunteer missionaries. A friend who was returning home soon had the complete DVD collection and every waking moment was consumed with watching episodes of Friends! The emptiness, sadness and lost feelings I had after she left with those DVDs were unlike anything I ever felt before. It was brutal! Thankfully, times have changed; there’s Netflix!
Price: Polish, $12.00. Lip Balm, $6.00. No limit on purchases
Available for purchase, Friday, May 4th, 11 am EST, to Monday, May 7th, 11:59 pm EST from Polish Pickup Online
